Our terms and summers are filled with fun themed nights here at Kanakuk K-1. We have parties, K-Lifes, mystery nights, man nights, princess nights, and the list goes on and on but today we are going to focus on one of our personal favorites: Tournament Tuesdays.
We love sports and we love competition so every Tuesday on the Kuk side of Kamp we compete in a different tournament! Some of our tournaments are team oriented while others are individual competitions. This year we have done Wiffle Ball World Series, Basketball March Madness, Wrestling, Football Super Bowl, and individual tournaments like ping-pong, washers, and putt-putt. We divide the teams and divisions by Choctaw and Cherokee tribes and then let the games begin. Making it to the championship or all-star game is often one of the highlights of a kampers term. It might just be a basketball or baseball game but to us it's a pretty big deal and we treat it like that.
For the Komos, the tribal competition is just as heated! Kampers get decked out in their Kickapoo and Kiowa colors anytime the opportunity presents itself. Our favorite tournament days are March Madness, Track and Swim meets and there is even an entire schedule dedicated to Tournament Day when every Komo participates in putt-putt, washers, jump rope, hopscotch, tennis ball bounce and ping pong brackets. Every tournament evening ends with a dance party and a tribal cheer from both the runner up and victor of the competition!
In a world with so much negativity we try to focus on the positives during competition, we want kids to leave Kamp with an excellent understanding of teamwork, fair play, and a strong work ethic! You would be amazed at how talented some of our kiddos are here at K-1. It’s a blast to get to watch them use their gifts and talents to represent their tribe and Creator through a little competition!
